SXSW Cultura to Watch 2025

We’re highlighting all things Latinidad at the South by Southwest Conference and Festivals from the new Selena Quintanilla documentary to actor Pedro Pascal’s featured panel. Check out the free events as well.

As all eyes turn to Austin for the South by Southwest Conference and Festivals, which runs from March 7-15, we’re excited to shine a bright light on all things Latinidad from música to cine and arte y comunidad.  

We believe cultura and nuestras historias at the fest help make it a special experience para todos.

FOR THE MOVIE LOVERS:

Uvalde Mom” (March 10, 11, 14): Nearly three years later, this gripping documentary follows Angeli Rose Gomez, a mother who bravely rescued her sons during the Uvalde school shooting, exposing law enforcement failures and igniting a fight for justice in her community and throughout the nation.

Selena y Los Dinos” (March 12 & 15): This documentary film offers an intimate look at the life and legacy of Selena Quintanilla, showcasing never-before-seen footage, heartfelt photographs, interviews, and the dedication of her family and bandmates to keep her memory alive.

42nd Street” (March 7, 9, 13): A journey into the heart of Dominican counterculture, this documentary highlights rebellious artists and dancers as they collide with authority in a fierce battle for self-expression.

La Salsa Vive” (March 7, 8, 14): Check out the world premiere of this documentary about the vibrant journey of salsa music from its New York origins to its passionate embrace in Cali, Colombia. 

Corina” (March 8, 10, 13): This Mexican film is a tale of resilience and adventure, following a reclusive young woman with agoraphobia as she steps beyond her comfort zone to track down a mysterious writer, taking risks and overcoming fears to save her job and the publishing house she loves.

ASCO: Without Permission” (March 10, 12, 13): This bold, genre-defying documentary captures the revolutionary spirit of the Chicano art collective ASCO, blending past and present to challenge and push the boundaries of art, activism, and filmmaking.

WHO TO WATCH:

SXSW also features TV stars, featured speakers y más. We’re looking at movers and shakers like:

Chilean American actor Pedro Pascal who will be on “The Last of Us” Panel  on March 8 discussing the upcoming season of the hit show with his co-stars including Austin’s own Gabriel Luna who is also a St. Edward’s University graduate

Legendary filmmaker and hometown hero Robert Rodriguez shares his insights into his trailblazing career and the future of action filmmaking. He’s known for iconic films like “El Mariachi” and “Spy Kids,” and now he’ll reveal his new venture on March 9 in a featured session.

MÚSICA TO CHECK OUT:

We’re also shining a light on música throughout the fest, including regional Mexican stars Grupo Frontera and Iván Cornejo. 

Plus, we’ve got our eyes on showcases that promise muy cool vibes with plenty of DJ power like the Buena Onda showcase on Sat. March 15 at Vaquero Taquero presented by Norf Norf and MAS Cultura. Showcasing artists include Austin’s own R&B-inspired artist Grace Sorensen and rising hip-hop artist xBValentine.

On Fri. March 14, check out the LatinATX showcase by EQ Austin at Lefty’s Brick Bar featuring artists such as neosoul art rock collective Lluvii, indie Latin pop artist Chicoselfie, sister rock/pop trio The Tiarras, and regional Mexican fusion artist Adrián Activo. Show starts at 7 p.m.

BELLY LAUGHS PARA TI:

Don’t forget that SXSW also brings comedy to Austin. Check out “Saturday Night Live” alumna Melissa Villaseñor, who blazed trails as the first Latina cast member of SNL. She’ll be performing on March 8 during “An Evening at the Hollywood Improv,” part of the festival’s celebration of the legendary Hollywood Improv’s 50th anniversary. Villaseñor, who has deep roots in LA’s comedy scene, joins a lineup that highlights the city’s influence on the art form, from historic clubs to experimental performances.

Other notable comics featured at the festival include Joe DeRosa, Christina Catherine Martinez, and Ian Lara

FREE UNOFFICIAL SXSW EVENTS:

March 7-8: Celebrate Latina excellence with The Latina Foundation and Austin Latinas Unidas at the House of Chingonas at Mira Mira Venue. This two-day event features Latina-led brand activations, networking, and inspiring discussions, kicking off on International Women’s Day weekend. This SXSW non-affiliated event is a powerful space to connect, celebrate, and uplift nuestra comunidad Latina.

March 13: Latinapalooza will take over The Continental Club (1315 S. Congress Ave.) from noon to 6 p.m. Enjoy a day of live música including performances by Latin Grammy-nominated artist Destiny Navaira, mujeres-only mariachi group Mariachi Las Coronelas, and sister trio The Tiarras. This 21+ event has no cover charge, so grab your amiguis y enjoy the day!

March 15: Get your ticket for SouthAmericano Showcase Vol. 6 at Sahara Lounge (1413 Webberville Road) to celebrate the vibrant and innovative sounds of las Américas. Enjoy an afternoon filled with diverse Latin rhythms, featuring performances from musicians visiting for music week. This is a unique opportunity to experience the future of Latin music aquí en Austin. Tickets $13.
