Watch: Campo’s “1987” music video

Campo is an Uruguayan music project created by musician and producer Juan Campodónico. Campo mixes indie-pop, electro, folk, rock, a spice of tango, some irresistible cumbia beats and hints of retro ‘50s and ‘60s Latin music to create their self-defined genre “subtropical.” The term refers to the ironic differences between their pop style and tropical music while recognizing other genres. The project is based off the collective of talented musicians, writers, composers and performers known as the musical ensemble Bajofondo, created by Campodónico and Academy award winner Gustavo Santaolalla.

The band recently released the music video for their song “1987,” the second track off their self-titled debut album released earlier this year. The song received a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Song and features Uruguayan musician Jorge Drexler. After making several versions of “1987”, the final version on their album includes layers of original cha-cha-cha rhythm; drums, guitars and keyboards that evoke a retro ‘80s feel that creates a new space and reality. In the video, the song creates the perfect moment in time for the encounter between a crash-landing astronaut from another world and his twin.
