Goddess
La Peña presents “Contemporary Fiber” an exhibit of fiber and mixed media artwork by Oscar Silva. It will be on display at La Peña’s gallery in Downtown Austin from August 14th – September 1st. The opening reception will be taking place Friday, August 14th from 6-8 pm and also features a performance by classical Mexican guitarist Buzz Guerra.
Oscar Silva is an artist who experiments with natural fibers and mixed media to explore their inherent sculptural capabilities. He often uses architectural design and natural fiber to investigate the confines of modern society. Mixing the qualities of nature with that of industrialization by using handmade paper and various fibers with mixed media allows him to engage fiber’s form while still preserving its integrity.
Oscar Silva received his B.F.A. in Studio Art from Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University) in San Marcos and his M.F.A. in Fiber with a minor in Sculpture from the University of North Texas in Denton. His work has been exhibited extensively in galleries throughout Texas, Michigan, and New Mexico. He has won numerous awards, including an international award for sculpture, and his work can be found in numerous private collections in Washington D.C., Chicago, Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, San Diego, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.
La Peña is an interdisciplinary cultural and educational organization dedicated to the enhancement of art in all its forms. La Peña’s mission is to support artistic development, provide exposure for emerging local visual artists, musicians, poets and other performing artists, and offer Austin’s visitors and residents the full spectrum of traditional and contemporary Latino art.
