[7/3] Preview: Viento Callejero, Como Las Movies at Mohawk

Viento Callejero posterThis holiday weekend is a good one for Latin music fans. Friday, July 3, California urban cumbia band Viento Callejero will be making the Austin of their current Remolino Tour at the Mohawk. The group will be joined by local headliners in their own right and fellow cumbia fusionists, Como Las Movies. This show happens on Mohawk’s indoor stage, so be ready for packed and sweaty night of cumbia goodness.

Formed in 2013, Viento Callejero is one of the standouts in the recent crop of newcomers in U.S.-based Latin Alternative. Guitarist Gloria Estrada was once a member of La Santa Cecilia and also served as the touring guitarist for María Del Pilar when she was performing as Pilar Díaz. Drummer Gabrial Villa is also a member of Chicano Batman. Bassist Federico Zuniga, Has collaborated or played with various bands including Sistema Bomb and Tokeson, rounds out the trio.

Their sound is a fusion of traditional cumbia music with merengue, reggae, dance hall, funk and rock. They released their self-titled debut album in July and features original songs along with classic cumbias interpreted with a modern twist.

Austin-based DJ Silent Rob (Right On Happy Hour, Heart & Soul Soundsystem) will be spinning throughout the night.

Mohawk is located at 912 Red River. Doors open at 9 p.m. All ages welcome. Cover will be $6 for 21+ and $8 for minors. Visit the Facebook event page here.
