[4/5] Preview: Making Movies, Como Las Movies at Holy Mountain

Making Movies posterSunday, Apr. 5, Latin Alternative fans in Austin will want to be at Holy Mountain for a “double feature” showcase with Kansas City’s bilingual rockeros Making Movies and our own Como Las Movies. Both bands are a great representation of the present and future of Latin music while keeping traditional elements engrained in their musical core.

Founded by Panamanian born brothers Enrique and Diego Chi, Making Movies draw from a range of musical influences that include traditional Latin genres and American alt-rock. No stranger to Austin, the group has performed at the Pachanga Latino Music Festival in 2014 as well as multiple Austin Vida presents showcases since 2010. The group’s most recent album is 2013’s A La Deriva, produced by Steve Berlin of Los Lobos.

Como Las Movies are Austin’s purveyors of nu-cumbia, fusing electronic synths and jazz elements with traditional cumbia. While mostly instrumental, the group will incorporate a guest vocalist on occasion. The group is composed of musicians from of my old Austin favorites of the past including Maneja Beto and Mitote.

Austin-based Afropop band Bamako Airlines opens the show. Early attendees will enjoy their fusion of traditional Afropo with modern-day funk, reggae and dance music.

Holy Mountain is located at 617 E. 7th Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. All ages welcome. $5 cover. Visit the Facebook event page here.
