Willie Colón is a legendary Puerto Rican trombonist by way of the South Bronx. He signed to Fania Records at age fifteen and recorded his first album at age seventeen. Colón is also a political and civil rights activist, having been a member of the Latino Commission on Aids as well as The United Nations Immigrant Foundation. Musically, he was more than a trombonist. Colón was also a producer, singer, director and arranger.
This Friday’s Fania Records mp3 give away comes from the anthonlogy the label put out in 1972, Colón’s legendary Crime Pays album. Known for being some of Colón’s best work, the album may even be more famous for its album cover. Ask any salsa lover or Fania Records collector and they will tell you that Crime Pays is one of their favorite albums, maybe even Colón’s best. The single we are sharing with you today is Colón’s first hit, “Jazzy.” The mambo jazz instrumental was originally on Colón’s debut album, El Malo. Listen to and download “Jazzy.”
