Best of SXSW Cultura

Saludos! Missed the fest or couldn’t get to see everything at South by Southwest this year? I got you.

This year marked my 10th SXSW anniversary! And it’s a particularly special one leading Austin Vida’s coverage.

My goal each year remains the same – amplify nuestra gente, nuestra música, arte y comunidad. Why? I believe our historias deserve to be told. I believe they inspire and connect us. And during SXSW when Austin has a global spotlight, it’s only fitting that our cultura, too, shines brightly.

Hope you enjoy this special SXSW edition of the newsletter. Expect your April Cultura Guide in your inbox next week.

Abrazos,

Nancy Flores, Austin Vida editor & publisher

What docs should be on your radar?

Local filmmaker Iliana Sosa’s movie ‘What We Leave Behind’ about her grandfather received two awards at the South by Southwest Film Festival in 2022. Contributed by MPRM Communications.

In honor of the resiliency our community has shown during these past two years and in celebration of the SXSW Film Festival’s in-person comeback, we’d like to highlight three documentaries that have nourished our souls. These films all beautifully weave together themes of home, identity and how place can strengthen our spirit.

Here’s some bands that made a splash and that we think you’d enjoy adding to your playlists.

What female artists are on the rise?

Mexican American songstress La Doña performed at several SXSW shows. She’s no stranger to Austin as she also was among the featured Austin City Limits Festival artists in October 2021. Photo contributed by Erika Goldring for BMI

In honor of Women’s History Month, we’re highlighting some fierce mujeres who performed at South by Southwest and who should be on your radar and playlists all year round.
