Back in the day when I was growing up, you couldn’t go anywhere in Austin without some teen or young 20-something Latino bumping the latest freestlye (Latin hip hop) cassette in their ride or walkman. If it wasn’t the latest from Viper Records or MicMac, it was a local mixtape from DJ 2DQ that you bought from him at Yo Yo’s or at Turntable Records.
While trends may have changed since then, your love for freestyle music didn’t go away. Thank goodness for you because on Sunday night, June 17, old school freestyle is coming back to Austin. Angel Clivillés from The Cover Girls and Lisette Melendez will be performing at Republic Live.
Angel Clivillés was born Louise Angel Sabater in The Bronx, New York. Clivillés is one of the original members of the legendary all female group The Cover Girls. She left the group in 1990 to pursue a career as a solo artist. Angel Clivillés released Angel, her solo debut, in 2000.
Lisette Melendez is best known for her 1991 mega-hit, “Together Forever”. While that song was her claim to fame in the dance or freestyle world, she did also have a successful Spanish language salsa album in the late ’90s, Un Poco De Mi. More recently Melendez has made her rounds in the club tours with other popular freestyle artists such as Cynthia.
