All you rowdy chuntaros, regios and vatos rudos better be ready. This Friday, June 22, Monterrey, Mexico’s El Gran Silencio is performing a headlining show in Austin at North Austin Event Center. With El Gran Silencio headlining and the incredible supporting acts from top to bottom, this looks to be one of the biggest Latin Alternative concerts of the year.
El Gran Silencio is the ultimate Latin fusion, blending elements of dub, reggae, rock, cumbia and vallenato. Current members include brothers Cano and Tony Hernandez, Isaac “Campa” Valdez, Julian “Moco” Villarreal, and Ezequiel Alvarado. They may just be responsible for introducing the U.S. to chuntaro style.
Also from Monterrey, Mexico on the bill is Danzonera Distortion Club. Formed in 2002 by Ivan Monsivais (Amaranta, Inspector, El Gran Silencio) and Cesar Hernandez, their music is what we classify as “Latin fusion.” They blend elements of heavy metal with cumbia, tropical, salsa, ska, and reggae.
Houston’s Los Skarnales are also on the bill with El Gran Silencio. The Latin ska group have been performing together since 1994 and are a regular at Austin venue Flamingo Cantina. Their unique fusion of ska, cumbia, punk, rockabilly and barrio swing make for one of the best live shows around.
Austin rock en Español group Bajo Influencia opens the show. North Austin Event Center is located at 10601 North Lamar Blvd. Tickets can be purchased at Revoluton Tattoo Studio or at the door if available. 18+ are welcome. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.
