Tonight amongst all the pre-festival madness going downtown, there is still great locally based music to be found. Flamingo Cantina, one of Austin’s purveyors of reggae, world and Latin music, is playing host to a great local world music showcase tonight. Sounds of Latin America and Africa will be filling the air in the popular 6th Street venue as two of Austin’s best take the stage.
For eight years Austin-based El Tule have been turning heads and making people dance. Their music is a unique fusion of merengue, cumbia, salsa and reggae. Like their music, the band’s makeup transcends cultural and social backgrounds. Fronted by bilingual vocalist and guitar player John Dell, the multicultural group behind Dell is composed of Stephen Svenley, Michael Penic, Tracy Chavez-Dell, Max Garza, Joseph Ledesma, Oscar Trejo and Joshua Collier. El Tule perform from 10-11:30 p.m.
Performing after El Tule are Austin-based Zomountchi. The band performs African-inspired music backed by a horn section. Founded by Ibrahim Aminou, originally from Niger, the band performs original songs and arrangements of traditional African songs. Zomountchi perform at midnight.
